How Invisalign® Works
Invisalign uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to gradually shift the teeth into the proper position and alignment. Patients wear sets of custom-created upper and lower aligners, which put gentle force on the teeth to move them slowly to where they need to be. After a few weeks, patients swap their current set of aligners for the next pair in the sequence. Most patients wear a total of 10 to 20 sets of aligners and achieve their desired results after a year (on average).
Invisalign can be used to treat the following problems:
- Crowded teeth
- Gaps or spaces in between the teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
Dr. Durán evaluates every candidate individually to determine whether they are eligible for Invisalign. If so, he takes X-rays and impressions of the teeth and uses the information to create a three-dimensional map to illustrate the scope of treatment.
Who Is A Candidate For Invisalign?
Invisalign is a wonderful option for teenagers that are embarrassed by crooked or crowded teeth and want to avoid wearing bulky, metal braces during a time in life where appearance is important. Invisalign is also preferred by adults that don’t want to draw attention to orthodontic treatment in the workplace.
However, Invisalign is not suitable for everyone. It works best for moderate orthodontic correction; cases of a more serious nature usually require traditional braces. It is also not suitable for children and young teenagers whose teeth are still growing. Candidates must have all their permanent teeth in order to move forward with treatment.
Also, Invisalign treatment requires a certain amount of care and attention. The aligners need to be worn nearly all day, every day; they should be removed for eating, drinking and cleaning. Individuals that are not committed to following these instructions should discuss their alternative options with Dr. Durán.
Based on this treatment plan, a series of customized aligners is fabricated to the patient’s specific needs. Patients should wear each set of aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them for meals and cleaning. Approximately every two weeks, the patient receives a new set of aligners to replace the previous set. Dr. Durán will check in with the patient periodically to monitor the treatment’s progress and answer any questions. Most patients complete Invisalign treatment in about a year.
